Coming off more like a Hollywood party where someone brought a camera instead of an actual movie shoot, Smokey and the Bandit was an out and out good-time hoot of a film. Starring Burt Reynolds, Sally Field, Jackie Gleason, Jerry Reed, Paul Williams and Mike Henry, and directed by ace stuntman (and Burt's pal) Hal Needham, the movie is probably just as well remembered for the Bandit's gleaming black & gold Firebird ®. Released in 1977, Smokey and the Bandit™ was the years second highest grossing film, behind only Star Wars. Its popularity inspired two sequels as well as a made for television movie.
